Nǐ hǎo! It’s been two weeks since I arrived in Ya’an and I can easily say that I love it here. That isn’t to say that it hasn’t been an adjustment, but it’s a welcome one. The city of Ya’an is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. The culture is rich and the people are kind and helpful. Many are curious to know where I am from and I am equally curious to learn about them. I find myself trying to learn Mandarin as quickly as possible so that I may truly immerse myself in this lovely city.
My introduction to Ya’an has also been easy because of the amazing women that I am lucky enough to work with! I can’t even imagine what this adventure would be like without Meghan, Celina, and Scout. Sadly, Meghan has returned to the States and has left us to fend for ourselves (We Miss You Meghan)! However, she has trained us well and we are more than ready to watch pandas all day.
The Bifengxia Panda base is just a short 20-minute bus ride away, and it is breathtakingly beautiful. It is a pleasure to be able to see the rich bamboo forests that cover the mountains surrounding the base. I find myself staring in awe every day.
As beautiful as the ride is, the highlight of this daily ride is its destination – Bifengxia. I still can’t believe that I get to watch pandas every day. As I become more involved with the research PDXWildlife is spearheading, I am given the opportunity to learn more about each individual panda. I don’t have a favorite (yet), and I may never have one because every single on is so special. However, I have noticed that many have their own personalities (of course!), and their own quirks which makes them very easy to love!
I look forward to learning more about the personalities of these wonderful creatures, and sharing these discoveries with you all!
