Xi Xi the “Runaway Bride” was born in 1998 and has captured the attention of many people across the world. She is called the Runaway Bride because she has escaped captivity on three separate occasions- First, during a hard rain, Second, during 2008 earthquake aftershock, and lastly, she escaped from Bifengxia when a tree fell down and allowed her to climb out of her pen. Lately, Xi Xi has been playing super-mom by raising two cubs at once- One of her own and another from Qian Qian (cub #1).

Other moms will also raise two cubs, swapping each in/out every 10 days, but the base is careful to only let the experienced mothers handle two cubs at once. Xi Xi is currently the only bear at the base handling two cubs at once. When the second cub was brought in, it was a heartfelt sight to see Xi Xi immediately walk across her pen to sniff the cub, pick it up by its neck and walk back to her favorite corner. Mother reunited with child… Very powerful stuff.
