Good progress was made on developing a prospectus for the independent field study involving macrofungi.  However, I’m learning in science and through this internship that there is always room for improvement (especially as research projects develop).

After renewing a magazine subscription to FUNGI, I had responded to an inquiry from Britt Bunyard (Publisher and Editor-In-Chief) about how I learned about the magazine.  I learned about it through a local mushroom club and saw him present a couple years ago.  This is a great magazine full of excellent articles and beautiful photos.

I gave Britt a brief description of the proposed field study (I promise more details will follow in the future once we have a better idea about our methodology), and asked him to recommend additional reading that might help with my project.  He forwarded my query to Steve Trudell, coauthor of Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest .

On a bike ride from Seattle to Portland last week, I met with Steve at the University of Washington (he even signed a copy of my book).  He was generous with his time and I appreciated his recommendations for further reading and the advice he gave about the project.

And so . . . the iterative process continues and changes were made to the prospectus.  When I returned home from Seattle I found a box containing back issues of FUNGI that I’ll be thumbing through in the upcoming weeks.

I’m looking forward to getting approval from Hood College to go ahead with the project.
