The male-male competition is in full swing, with over a third of the data already collected. Due to the current lull in the number of females in estrus, we are able to spend more time in areas outside of the breeding centre. The kindergarten being our favourite place to go, the 2016 Bifengxia cubs give us encouragement to persevere during the breeding season.
At the start of our internship, the 2016 Bifengxia cubs were able to climb the small trees, with little success at getting down safely which resulted in lots of falls. This appeared to have no effect on their confidence and they went straight back up the tree again.
Now one month later, this determination has resulted in all the cubs being able to climb to the tops of the highest trees in their enclosure, without falling. Proof that practise makes perfect.
We’ll try to keep you updated on the cubbies at the kindergarten!

My adopted panda, Wen Hui, lives at Shenshuping. She is Lin Ping’s younger twin born 7.27.15. Do you ever get up that way? – I’d love a current picture – I get them quarterly from Pandas International but quarterly is not enough!
I love hearing about your adventures at the kindergarten! Keep up the good work!
Sincerely,
JoAnn Haynes Mann
Hi JoAnn,
We will be headed to Shenshuping in early August to begin our reintroduction and weaning studies. With any luck we might be able to grab a few pictures of Wen Hui. Thank you for your support.
Nate-
Do you know the names of the cubs, or the names of their moms?
Danielle, We weren’t able to get the names of the moms yet 🙁
We’ll keep trying!
Oh, how wonderful! Thank you so much! Please tell her somebody in America loves her very much and she’s on my bucket list!
JoAnn
