Our camera-savvy PDX Wildlife intern, Angelica Ruedas, was able to snap a few cub photos while she was collecting data at the Bifengxia breeding center. The only dilemma that I am having in posting them is that I am unsure of who is who. All of the cubs in the photos are unknown. They are great photos and instead of letting them go to waste, I decided to post them anyway. In the future I promise to get a positive ID on who’s who.
As the opportunities present themselves, we will try our best to give cub and mother updates. The pictures aren’t usually hard to come by. It’s the identity that seems to be the most difficult. Regardless, they are all great looking bears. Thanks for viewing.
Thank you so much! I think it’s the same cub in the two pictures and looks about the right age–a baby Zhen Zhen! Thanks again.
Our pleasure-
When we return in October I’m sure that we will be amazed at their growth. Quite a treat to be there during so many births.
A great year for cubbies–I hope they’ll get to stay with their moms for a while. Please thank Angelica too.
Then again–looking at some pictures of other cubs born around that time makes some of us think all these cubs look too old to be ZZ’s since they’re just a shade under 3 weeks old now. Sorry to keep bugging you, but we really miss her and want to keep up with the cubs (like you couldn’t tell!).
Very true. I’m sure that I will receive additional photos in the near future that will straighten things out. Stay tuned.
Zhen Zhen’s daughters are much smaller than that. They were born 3 weeks ago.
Hi Daneille,
Very likely. I’m sure that our hard working interns will be able to straighten out who’s who in the coming days. I will try to keep you updated. Thanks for reading and commenting.
Does anyone know what has become of Miao Miao, born to Hai Zi at Bifengxia in June 2013? I’ve been trying to follow up on the class of 2013, and I can’t find any data on her.Thank you for your help. You all do such great work.
You got us looking through our data and the current studbook… Hai Zi did have twins in 2013, but the 2014 studbook is only showing that one survived- named Xin Xin. We are currently at the Dujiangyan base, but will ask around once we return to Bifengxia next week. If you don’t hear from us, please message us again. Thanks for the kind comment.
Thank you so much, Nathan (if I may). Pandas International posted adoption photos of a viable living Miao Miao born in 2013, twin to Xin Xin, with the stud number 863. In the 2014 breeding recommendations she and her sister are listed together as pandas with unestablished sires, but in 2015 breeding recommendations (done in November 2014), Miao Miao has disappeared. I’m grateful for any information you might be able to find. Thank you for all you do. I enjoyed the video tour of the Dujiangyan Base.
Hi Patricia. Now that we are back at the Bifengxia base, we were able to ask a helpful individual about Miao Miao. I am sad to say that she died. We asked about the cause of death, but they were unable to provide any further information. I wish I had more positive news to share.
Thank you, Nathan. This is very sad news. But it’s good to know. Thank you so much for your kindness in checking this for me. Good luck with all your good and necessary work!
