How to Participate:
Watch Behavior Videos
View the series of stereotype lessons to get an understanding for how to classify certain behaviors. These are the panda behaviors you will be looking for when you go to record data! After every few lesson videos, there’ll be short quizzes to help test your knowledge before taking the final interobserver exam….but don’t worry, these quizzes are just for learning, so take them as many times as you’d like!
Take the Interobsever Exam
Once you complete the videos, you can take the interobserver exam. Don’t forget to download the Ethogram Study Guide and Tally Sheets! When you have a project that requires several different observers, it’s vital everybody is on the same page for data collection. In order to ensure this, we have to take an Interobserver reliability test. Be sure to watch the lesson videos and have an idea of what you’re looking for. Once you pass, you’ll receive your Citizen Scientists certification and we’ll send you a packet on how to get started helping with our research!…we’re here if you have any questions at all!
Record Webcam Panda Behaviors
As a certified Citizen Scientists, you’ll be able to begin collecting data with us! The main component of the project relies on behavioral data collected through viewing panda webcams. You can choose any panda you’d like, just know who you’re watching and where they’re located. Find a list of watchable Panda Cams on our FAQ’s page.
Send Us Your Collected Data
Once, you send us your data, we’ll be combing it all for publication and your name will be added under contribution in the final journal article! The type of data you can achieve is astounding when enabled by the efforts of many. Citizen scientist project are some of the most accurate and revealing data sets for this reason…so we couldn’t be doing this without your help!
Introduction:
What are Stereotype Behaviors?
Stereotypies are one of the most misunderstood behaviors in zoo animals. Defined as “frequent repetition of the same, typically purposeless movement, gesture, posture, or vocal sounds or utterance”, stereotypies in zoo animals are often readily identifiable by the public and highly criticized as they are typically associated with poor welfare.
But are Stereotypic Behaviors as bad they seem?
“While the performance of stereotypies often arises in suboptimal conditions associated with poor welfare, individuals that perform more stereotypies have been shown to demonstrate better welfare (e.g. reduced cortisol levels, lower blood pressure, etc.) than less stereotypic individuals.”
How Does this Project Help?
While our recent research has shed light on some of the beneficial sides to stereotypic behavior, such as increased breeding success in highly-stereotypic male pandas, there is still so much not understood about these behaviors in Giant pandas, such as how they develop, when they develop, and why! In order to answer this, we need a HUGE amount of data on stereotype behaviors from pandas of all ages all around the globe.
This is where you all come in!
