So the last couple of days have been absolutely insane but a common theme hidden within the craziness has been trees full of pandas. Yes you heard me correctly, trees overflowing with, more often than not, tiny little black and white fuzz balls. That’s because a majority of the time these pandas spotted in trees are cubs. The other day there were four hanging out in a tree which fortunately Nate was able to snap a picture of and share on the Facebook page but I have a couple to share with this post as well! Now my initial thought process was focused on figuring out how these tiny, clumsy, chubby cubs are able to maneuver their way up into trees that, for the most part, don’t look like they can even support one cub at the tree trunk let alone four. However, today I was fortunate enough to finally witness the magic for myself.
While completing a rather uneventful maternal care study on Shu Qin and her cub, or more so Shu Qin and her bamboo, I noticed her cub beginning an awkward ascent of a tree that resembled the infamous Christmas tree from A Charlie Brown Christmas. Somehow the cub managed to make it to the top of the flimsy looking tree but immediately seemed to regret this decision and kind of just sat up there looking around confused as can be. However, the cub remained in the tree for the remainder of the study and unfortunately I wasn’t able to find out the answer to the second question that came to mind when observing the four cubs in the tree: How do they get down!?
I’m Zachary Steele and if you have any questions please post them below. I’ll be here at Bifengxia until February studying these wonderful bear behaviors almost everyday. Thanks for reading!
