Located about 2 hours from Chengdu, Gengda is nestled in the picturesque Wolong Nature Reserve and is the newest location within the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas (CCRCGP). All together, the CCRCGP is comprised of Bifengxia, Dujiangyan, Hetaoping (Wolong), and Gengda (Tiantaishan & Shenshuping).
Currently, our main base of operations is at Bifengxia where we have four interns conducting various studies on a year-round basis. Just this year we expanded to include reintroduction research at Hetaoping and Gengda, with two interns rotating in every few months. However, there is a shift currently taking place that could possibly cause us to move our operations almost entirely to the ever-so-quiet Gengda. This all depends on where the bears are going to be.
As Gengda is new, having been built in the last few years, most people don’t quite have a grasp on its location. I’ve put together a few maps, borrowed some others, and hopefully can give you a better idea. We’ll know more on where we will be stationed in a few months as bears and people start to settle into their respective positions. If the maps don’t explain the setup, send me an email or leave a comment below. Cheers!
Wow! Thank you very much.
Gai, Thanks for reading.
Nate-
Thanks for giving us some perspective on the location of everything! Very interesting!
My pleasure. It’s an interesting setup in the mountains of Wolong. We’re all still getting used to the quiet mountain town and new arrangements.
