Eight things you might have in common with pandas:
- Are you a daily nap taker? Every afternoon the pandas lounge about and catch up on some sleep from their exhausting panda lifestyle. Bai Yang is no different!
- You are a messy eater! Xiang Ge is one of the many messy eaters on base. Every time he eats bamboo he tends to cover himself in it!
- You really like bread and carrots! These are treats that pandas get daily and they absolutely must get every crumb!
- Maybe you like to climb trees! Dian Dian is a new bear to the base and loves to spend lots of time in her tallest tree!
- Do you love playing in water? If so, you are like Jin Ke! He loves to sit in his fountain and splash around!
- If you like to sit on your porch at home and just listen to the day, you might be like Shen Wei. He likes to sit in the shade and relax when its hot out!
- You might be like Yi Bao if you like to take walks every day! As a panda with many stereotypic paces, Yi Bao is always on the move!
- If you happen to be a chatter box you might be like Wu Gang and Qian Qian! They love to communicate with other bears and humans!
If you said yes to more than three of these, you might be a panda!

Lorelei Burnside is our 2017 Summer intern focusing on stereotypic observations. Aside from spending countless hours collecting behavioral data, she also gets the extreme privilege of running the lyophilizer to prepare panda feces for hormone analysis. I’m going to venture a guess that she considers herself part panda. Be sure to send her your response if you are part panda as well.
I am a panda! I’m very happy to say! Thank you, Lorelei for pointing that out to me! Best of luck in all your endeavors!
Sincerely, JoAnn Mann
Yep, I’m a panda (except for the tree climbing – I pass on that). Thanks for this delightful post Lorelei. We panda lovers appreciate hearing for those of you who are lucky enough to be living with those precious creatures. Hope your time in China has been as rewarding as you had hoped.
