As we packed Meghan into her Uber lift for the airport, the 24 degree F. chill began to give way to a light dusting of snow over our Portland, Oregon driveway. However cold it might feel to her now, I fear that she will be frozen to the core when she reaches the mountain landscape of Gengda. The last update that my computer spat at me was that the temperature for the week is supposed to reach lows of about 6 degrees F. I hope that her battery powered, heat generating socks, leave her cozy and warm for this week-long trek into opening up reintroduction research.
Let’s wish her good luck on her novel and cold adventure. Be Safe & Stay Warm!
You brave soul. I hope there’s central heat though I doubt it. I stayed outside the BFX base one January night and the hotel owner let me use a space heater, but I still was cold. Best of luck and good wishes for your stay at Gengda.
Hi Charlene,
We were both commenting on the size of her luggage just before she left. There was such a gluttony of winter clothing that she had to take the full size roller which is usually slated for our 3-5 week trips. Just having come back from a solid 40 degree F. stay in BFX, I can only imagine how deep the cold will penetrate at 6 degrees. I found myself bundled in as many layers as I could manage.
I was speaking to a few Australian panda volunteers who were saying that they too were a tad bit cold. I offered our space heaters, but I think it was their last night.
But, yes. I do believe they have heat in Meghan’s hotel. Otherwise I suspect that she would have packed a mummy bag.
Cheers!
Stay warm, Meghan! Bless you for your work and for braving the cold for our lovely pandas! Thank you!
Thanks Joann! I’m sure I’ll still be cold 😉 Poor Zach David will be toughing it out longer than me though! Our interns are awesome!
