Now it’s official. The last mating of the season just took place between Ge Ge and Wu Gang. Given that it’s May 30th, this can be considered a late breeding. Ge Ge was transferred back to Bifengxia a few days ago and put between Tong Tong and Wu Jun but wasn’t showing to much interest in either male. Once Wu Gang was transferred in the sparks started to fly. Here is how Doireann Ferris described her first panda mating-
“Ge Ge was standing on all fours with Wu Gang latched onto her back side and not letting go. He was on his back, rocking, and biting into her. It was monumental to witness”.
With this final breeding, PDXWildlife now shifts gears and will focus on four smaller, but equally important studies that directly support the male-male competition project. We will be looking at Personality, Stereotypes, Maternal Care and Hormone Profiles. Exciting times here at Bifengxia.
